So in one of the numerous Merrimac Sessions recording the Xyphoid Process Grayskull album, Red concocted an idea/challenge at eleventeen in the morning. It was called the “20 Minute Workout” and the thing was for each of us to write a rhyme in 20 mins or less, then perform and record for posterity. Contestants were Red of course, Dirty Dave Rash, Mr Malice Tom Rau, and yours truly. I have this track somewhere at home, but I thought I’d share my favorite verse. So enjoy the musical stylings of your boy Big Red tha 7 ft Hustla:
Ya’ll hate my demo and my habits, never liked ya’ll neither
Rag it, bag it huff some ether, chase it down with a heater
Pissed to meet ya, Industrial strength spelled with a capital E*
Bonnaroo is the apocalypse**, death to all fucking hippies (background “fuck you!”)
Yo I hate bare feet, so invest in some socks and shoes and walk casually through this Hawk beat
Economically weak, but never truly sour
Just an act to pass the hour, Steve Hawk and Dave got devoured
At a quarter past the hour, no offense intended
But did I forget to mention that your rhymes are overrated?***
This new surely belated, my apologies, I’ve been heavily sedated.
*reference to J’s tag in college, Endustrial, an ode to everyone’s favorite late night snack
**the first of these super duper hippie jams was held that weekend, so we were the “real heads” that skipped to stay home and , well, umm…..
***clearly a stab at me….

Please note that the cadence of this rhyme is where the art is. THat stab was not at you, but at D Rash who insisted on rhyming about having no drink or fries, just a chicken samich.
The workout (which does not rival the Mud Neck 3 B's work out) was designed to get you to spit the fire. Your rhyme that came out of that should be bronzed like a baby's first shoe. Lyrical (or mental) workouts are neat and are much less physically demanding...unless you do them at 4 AM like we did this one.
now that i think of it, you actually wrote 2 verses while others could only handle 1.
highlights: "dirty NOVA socially perverse, the goddam Rivermill is the worst, my sex life it must be cursed", and "living a dream but not asleep"
