It was early high school and America's Funniest Videos hosted by Bob Saget was at its ratings peak. They used to do a segment featuring the "Jackalope" which was some sort of hybrid animal that looked like part rabbit/guinea pig/small dog- it ran real fast with hunched shoulders. Some said Jason looked like this animal when he ran around playing baseball. It stuck with many until "Treecher" was coined later shortened to "Treech"
